Forest Stand Types in the Acadian Forest

A "stand" is forest parcel which contains an grouping of trees of certain species of certain ages. A minimum patch size to be considered a separate "stand" is typically between 2 and 5 acres of size (to maintain minimum manageable and functional size).

Following is a list of the recognized forest types in the Acadian Forest. The first column shows a very basic forest cover typing that is often used. The center column indicates more accurate forest characterization, and the column on the right indicates the forest vegetation community as defined by the Maine Natural Areas program of the Maine Department of Conservation. This classification is consistent with the typing of forests by the Province of New Brunswick, Canada.

Each forest ecosystem has certain tree species, and is found of sites with similar conditions that favor it, including certain soils, drainage, aspect ratio to the Sun, micro-climate, etc.
