From Evangeline
A Tale of Acadie

"This is the Forest Primeval...

...This is the forest primeval; but where are the hearts that beneath it leaped like the deer, when he hears in the woodland the voice of the huntsman? Where is the thatch-roofed village, the home of Acadian farmers -- Men whose lives glided on like rivers that water the woodlands, Darkened by shadows of earth, but reflecting an image of heaven? The Upper St. John Valley Community Forest Project

The Upper St. John Valley Community forest project was established to promote sustainable forest management in the region by providing valuable information to Valley communities, and developing and marketing OWA’ forest simulation modeling and planning services (marketed under Habitat Planning www.habitatplanning.com). During the project, a holistic cruise method was developed and implemented which in addition to information on overstory trees, was used to collect information on understory regeneration, stand structure, wildlife activity, and select indicators of biodiversity in all community-owned forested properties from Allagash along the St. John River down to Van Buren. Most of the field work has been conducted by students enrolled at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, who have been sponsored as interns by the Project Manager. Spatial forest models and recommended forest management treatments to meet each communities goals will be developed by the end of March 2009.

Funding support has been provided in 2007 and 2008 by the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund (MOHF), the University of Maine and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Forest Biofuel Research Initiative (FBRI).

This document is intended to provide a brief framework for sustainable forest management. To that end, I have attempted to define what sustainable means, and what the forest is.
